As a 100% internet and export-oriented sector, the export sector of BASIS members has lost Tk 500 crore in four days. Therefore, Bangladesh Association for Software Information Services-BASIS has demanded to give internet connection on priority basis to the information technology industry first for BASIS members. BASIS President Russell T Ahmed fears that if the Internet connection does not come soon, the ICT sector will not achieve the export target of 5 billion and 30-50 percent of this sector will lose their jobs.

He opined so while speaking at the review meeting on ICT Export Situation held at a hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday. Senior Vice President Rashidul Islam, Vice President Syed Mohammad Kamal, Iqbal Ahmed Fakhrul Hasan, Director Mostafizur Rahman Sohel were present in the meeting.

In the press conference, Russell T Ahmed said, Internet is our life line. So, if it stops, our breathing will also stop.

In response to a question asking for the maximum punishment to catch the saboteurs on the Internet, he said that the security of the network of the last 10-15 years has been questioned. A regular network topology audit would not have led to such a disaster. Technology, Network Topology and Safe Internet Guidelines are being developed by BASIS to prepare for future internet blackouts by hackers.
